The Tampa Bay Rays may be at risk of changing their name again, but this time it might not be as simple as dropping a word. Rays owner Stu Sternberg has announced that he’s considering selling the franchise, and he’s not sure that any local buyers would be interested. He also more than implied that a potential buyer may do so with the intention of moving the team. Baseball’s greatest Cinderella-team of the last few years is now facing its latest challenge, and it may be one that it can’t win.

A quick look through the blogosphere shows that just about every fan of baseball wants to see Washington Nationals starter Stephen Strasburg in this year’s All-Star Game. A quick flip through various baseball telecasts shows that just about every commentator doesn’t. They say that Strasburg hasn’t earned his spot, having been in the big leagues for under a month. The All-Star Game has meaning; it has history. Strasburg is just a pitcher who has done phenomenal things in a very short time.

There is no division is baseball quite as hot as the American League West is right now. While the three-and-a-half game margin between the first-place Texas Rangers and second-place LA Angels is the widest gap of any playoff race, the Rangers themselves are 8-2 in their last ten games, the Halos and last-place Mariners are 7-3. While the final team is only 5-5 over their last 10, the Athletics are riding a four-game win streak which is the longest current wining streak in the majors.

If you haven’t heard about Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya’s history of injuries, how much time do you have? If you haven’t seen his latest injury, don’t. Zumaya threw a 99 mph 3-2 pitch to Delmon Young on Monday night and his elbow almost literally exploded doing so. Young fouled the pitch off and moments later froze in horror as he and the rest of the world watched as Zumaya fell to the ground clutching his elbow and writhing in pain.

There’s something to be said about a team that knows how to hit the long ball. That thing is that if that’s all they can hit, they’re still going to lose. Take the Toronto Blue Jays, who lead the majors in long balls with 115. They also just dropped two of three games to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Jays were limited to just seven runs in the series, every one of which came in as part of their four homers.

The U.S. World Cup team is eliminated from the World Cup

After a valiant effort, the U.S. World Cup team were eliminated by Ghana in the World Cup’s first round of elimination matches. The U.S. lost 2-1 when Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan scored what proved to be the winning goal three minutes into the first extra time period. The U.S. team’s advancement into this round, as well as being the top club in their group coming out of group play, despite the obstacles of bad refereeing, says a lot about the team. The television ratings proved that Americans were following the team, and for however long, the viewing public could appreciate the sport. Fans and supporters of soccer in the States hope that that appreciation can last long, especially considering the drama and thrill of this World Cup’s U.S. squad, which was led by Landon Donovan and Tim Howard, both of whom played with the heart of champions, although without its title.

It was a busy week and change for Jonathan Papelbon. On the 19th, he helped his team defeat the Dodgers and got a win. The following day was a similar Red Sox victory, this time getting a save for his efforts. On the 23rd, the Rockies made quick work of Papelbon, giving him his first blown save of the season as well as a loss. The next night looked similar as Papelbon blew another save, but his team bounced back and he got his second win of the week. On Saturday, Papelbon returned to normal recording his 17th save of the season in an eight-pitcher effort to defeat the Giants.

As Carlos Zambrano threw the water cooler down to the floor in anger, fans in U.S. Cellular Field cheered. At least half the city of Chicago has something to cheer about. Tough times seem to be a recurring theme for the Chicago Cubs, and Friday’s interleague game against their south side rivals was no different. The Cubs’ 6-0 loss to the White Sox was the latest in what has been a fall that now sees the Cubs with a 32-41 record.

Rollins back from injury, may make All-Star lineup

Are the Philadelphia Phillies starting to come back around? With a 7-3 record in their last 10 games, the injury-plagued Phillies share the best record with the Mets for the last week and a half. The team also got a shot in the arm when former All-Star Jimmy Rollins rejoined the team on Tuesday in advance of their three-game sweep against the Cleveland Indians. Rollins is a welcome offensive and defensive improvement at shortstop that the Phillies have been lacking this season.

Los Angeles Lakers head coach Phil Jackson to retire?

Phil Jackson, iconic coach thanks to his record 11 NBA records, is thinking about retirement and leaving the NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers. Jackson who led both the Chicago Bulls and Lakers to three-peats, could win another trifecta should he come back for the 2010-11 NBA season and win an amazing fourth set of title three-peats. However, Jackson’s health will be the most important factor on whether or not he returns to the sidelines, not the promise of winning another title or even money it seems. It’s known that Lakers owner, Jerry Buss, wants Jackson to take a significant paycut from Jackson’s $12 million he earned this past season. However, how do you not pay, arguably, the greatest NBA coach whatever he wants, especially coming off a championship season? But, that’s if Jackson is deemed healthy enough. This much is certain, the Lakers players and fans want Jackson back.
